The World Cup.
The biggest and best competition in our beautiful game and probably the biggest tournament in the world for any sport. The men’s World Cup kicks off tonight with Mexico v South Africa, a bloated World Cup spread across Mexico, Canada, and the USA. 48 teams, 104 matches. It’s massive. The best players from around the globe coming together to compete and give football fans what we want – multiple live matches to watch every day for just over a month.
It's a feast of football and the Football Dictionary is embarking on a World Cup A-Z during the tournament.
The Football Dictionary is all about the terminology. If you’re new to the sport and want to watch the World Cup and understand what’s going on, we’ve got plenty of definitions. This includes everything from the technical side of the game in terms of playing, to the tactics and stats that add layers to the sport but also slang terms that the everyday fan might use. If you want to find out what a False 9 is, what a thunderbastard is or why the commentators keep going on about xG, we’re here to help. It’s fun, and we’re here to engage with you. If you feel there’s something missing, you can add a definition to the site.
For the World Cup, we want to provide more context to the history of the tournament. We’ll be releasing blog posts for each letter of the alphabet with some of the best, worst, and mad moments from the World Cup over the years. There will be posts from the first World Cup in 1930 all the way through to the modern day, funny moments, momentous matches, and more.
Now, we understand there are many problems with this World Cup, especially in the USA. There is visa chaos for players, coaching staff, administrators, fans, and even referees, high ticket prices, long distances to travel, and way too many matches. It might end up being a World Cup full of empty stands.
For football fans though, when the action begins, it’s hard to take your eyes off the pitch. There’s plenty of drama ahead, great goals, red cards, and entertainment.
Look out for letter ‘A’ tomorrow!
