Europa League
The Europa League is the 2nd competition in European football, organised by UEFA. Originally called the UEFA Cup from 1971 until 2009 when it was rebranded as the Europa League, team below the Champions League places in European domestic leagues qualify. Games are played on Thursday nights, and often feature teams on the up that are not quite ready for the Champions League or big teams who haven't quite made the grade in the previous season. The winners of the Europa League qualify for the following season's Champions League and also the European Super Cup which is the pre-season showcase against the previous season's Champions League winners.
Unai Emery is the master of the Europa League. He's won the trophy five times during spells as manager of Sevilla, Villarreal, and Aston Villa.
Refers to a big match in Europe between two teams from Britain. Classically this would be between one of the Old Firm Scottish giants (Celtic and Rangers) against a traditional big team from England (Liverpool and Manchester United), but it can refer to teams from the same country playing each other in European competition too. There’s familiarity, a big atmosphere from both sets of fans, and even greater bragging rights.
In the first season of the rebranded Champions League in 1992/93, English Champions Leeds United faced Scottish champions Glasgow Rangers. Rangers won the second round match 4-2 on aggregate.
